Ginologist’s Floral variant has got to be one of my favourite gins currently on the market! I first tasted it during a gin tasting at a popular craft beer restaurant in Jeffrey’s Bay and fell in love with it. As a result, my brother-in-law gifted me a bottle, and ever since then, I’ve made sure to have one of these stocked in my liquor cabinet.
Unlike most other gin distilleries, Ginologist is Gauteng-based, more specifically Bedfordview. According to their website, their founding members include a Master Distiller whose name they are keeping secret, and it’s not hard to understand why, since Ginologist blends are in a class all their own. Ginologist’s gins, in particular the Floral, has also walked away with numerous awards, including gold at the 2018 Michelangelo International Wine & Spirits Awards, Silver at the International Wine and Spirit Competition, and Gold at the SA Women’s Wine and Spirits Awards. It was also voted as SA’s best Gin by the Sunday Times.
On to the details: As the name suggests, Recipe 01 Fl is their Floral variant (the other two are Citrus and Spice), and as a result, one can expect quite a fragrant aroma. According to the website, specific notes include rose geranium and orange blossom. Personally, it always reminds me of summer and picnics, and I love the idea that I am drinking the actual essence of flowers. Drinking this always makes me think of sweet peas, peonies, and pansies, some of my favourite flowers. Ginologist truly has a way of transporting your senses to another place.
For this post we went with classic floral combinations including pansies, berries, and lavender; all mixed with a Sugar Free tonic to keep the drink as light as possible.
At the time of writing, Ginologist retails for R299 (on sale) at Takealot. On The Gin Guy, it currently retails for R349.
